Key Stage 3

Year 7

On entry to St Thomas More RC College, pupils are placed into form groups under the care of a form tutor. There is a Head of Year who is responsible for each year group. We have well established links with the feeder primary schools and enables smooth transition from primary to secondary school. Pupils are placed into their form groups after consultation with their primary school teachers. The forms are made up of an equal mix of pupils of all abilities. Pupils are taught in these form groups throughout Year 7. Religious Education and all National Curriculum subjects are taught and National Curriculum guidelines are followed in all subjects. Homework is an important part of the curriculum and in year 7 the pupils are set homework every night which should take about one hour to complete. At the end of year 7 pupils are placed into ability bands for Religious Education, History, Geography, Science and Modern Foreign Languages and into sets for Mathematics and English.

Years 8 and 9

The pattern of the curriculum in Years 8 and 9 is similar to year 7, with the addition of the opportunity for some pupils, to study a second foreign language (German). After easter in Year 9 pupils state their preference for the course(s) they wish to study to examination level in Years 10 and 11.

Key Stage 4

Years 10 and 11

All pupils follow GCSE in Religious Education, Mathematics, English and Science. Examination courses for all pupils are also available in Technology and French. In addition, pupils can choose from a wide variety of additional subjects including Business Studies, German, Art, Information Technology, Music, History, Geography, Sociology and Physical Education. Vocational Courses are provided and a Tutorial Programme completes a broad and balanced curriculum suited to the aptitudes and abilities of each pupil. All pupils will be entered for an appropriate examination in each of the subjects they study at Key Stage 4. Our pupils are encouraged towards good learning habits and self discipline which we believe will serve them well in a rapidly changing society.
