Key Stage 3
On entry to St Thomas More RC College, pupils are placed into form groups under the care of a form tutor. There is a Pupil Achievement Leader who is responsible for each year group. The college has well-established links with our feeder primary schools and the programme of integration enables smooth transition from primary to secondary phase.
Pupils are placed into their form groups after consultation with their primary school teachers. The forms are made up of an equal mix of pupils of all abilities. Pupils are taught in these form groups throughout Year 7 for most subjects. However, in Mathematics, Science and English pupils are organised into sets within two parallel bands based on Key Stage 2 test scores. National Curriculum guidelines are followed in all subjects.
Year 8 & 9
The pattern of the curriculum in Years 8 and 9 is similar to Year 7. However Modern Languages is also taught from now on in ability sets within the bands. There is also the opportunity for some pupils to study a second foreign language.
In Year 9 some subjects begin to follow GCSE programmes of study.
Key Stage 4
All pupils study a Level 2 qualification in Religious Education, Mathematics, English and Science and follow a programme in Physical Education and Citizenship, PHSE and Careers. Additionally pupils are able to choose from a wide range of GCSE and vocational courses including Art, Art and Design, Business Studies, Construction, French, Food, Geography, German, Graphics, History, Media, IT, Music, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Spanish and Textiles. A small number of pupils access vocational courses in Hair and Beauty, Motor Vehicle and Construction at Tameside College.
A thorough Information, Advice and Guidance programme in Y9 ensures all our pupils choose courses which give a broad and balance curriculum suited to their aptitudes and abilities. All pupils are entered for an appropriate exam in the subjects they study at Key Stage 4.
Our pupils are encouraged towards good learning habits and self-discipline which we believe will serve them well in a rapidly changing society.
