Our Young Sport Ambassadors had an experience of a lifetime when they were invited to the ‘Sainsbury’s 100 days to go reception’ at the Houses of Parliament. The students got the chance to make a whistle stop tour of London visiting the official Olympic countdown clock in Trafalgar Square, take a walk along the Mall and Whitehall, make a trip on the London Eye and lunch on the South Bank all courtesy of Sainsbury’s in recognition of College’s involvement in the Active Kids scheme. The scheme has seen pupils from all year groups given the opportunity to sample Paralympic sport and gain an appreciation of what sport can mean to everyone. At the reception pupils were given a tour of the Houses of Parliament by Andrew Gwynne MP, followed by a drinks reception with MPs, Peers from the House of Lords, Paralympic and Olympic Athletes and organisers of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, they were also given the chance to have their photograph taken with the Paralympic torch.

St Thomas More Digital Leaders scoop National Media Award
Congratulations to the college magazine team who were ‘Highly Commended’ for their entry at the 2012 Shine School Media Awards. The team of year 10 pupils were amongst a shortlist from 170 participating schools following a rigorous judging process. The Master of the Stationers’ Company, Nigel Stapleton, said the Company’s passion for words went back over 600 years and the Shine School Media Awards were an investment in passing on that passion to a new generation of young people. Well done to the team which includes: Roisin Clegg, Carly Mcilroy, Shannon Cregg and Sarah Farrelly.

Small Robots Make Big Impact Students in year 8 spent an exciting day developing Nano-bots in a Science and Technology cross-curricular day. As part of the colleges STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative, students designed and built models of miniature robots with medical applications. Students worked in teams. They selected a medical condition which they wanted to treat and then designed a model robot for this purpose. At the end of the day the designs and presentations were judged by STEM Ambassadors from the Museum of Science and Industry. Winners Connor Reedy, Rebecca Shepherd and Sophie Pearson were awarded prizes by the STEM Ambassadors.
